But then, what is a planetary boundary ?
Carbon is only
part of the table
Climate change, one boundary among others !
Planetary boundaries were initially proposed by the Stockholm Resilience Center. There are 9 terrestrial processes that enable the habitability of the Earth for the human species. Planetary boundaries are the thresholds beyond which the process is significantly disrupted. Climate change is one, ozone depletion is another.
Click on the earth and discover the state of the 9 planetary boundaries

Biosphere integrity
🔥 High-risk zone
The rate of disappearance of living species is now 100 to 1000 times faster than the average observed over the last 10 million years.
Climate change
⚠️ Increasing-risk zone
In 2022, the Earth will have warmed by +1.15°C compared to the pre-industrial period. The phenomenon is irreversible on the scale of a human life.
Novel entities
🔥 High-risk zone
350,000 new chemical entities (synthetic products, plastics, GMOs, endocrine disruptors, etc.) have been created by the human species.
Stratospheric ozone depletion
✅ Safe-operating zone
La couche d'ozone a un rôle protecteur pour le vivant. Elle se reforme grâce à l’interdiction des gaz chlorés qui la désagrégeaient.
Atmospheric aerosol loading
✅ Safe-operating zone
Aerosols affect the functioning of the Earth system in several ways: cloud formation, terrestrial energy balance, etc.
Ocean adification
✅ Safe-operating zone
The ocean is necessary for our survival for the services it provides. Part of the CO2 emitted dissolves in the oceans and causes its acidification.
Biogeochemical flows
🔥 High-risk zone
The massive use of agricultural fertilizers containing nitrogen and phosphorus has made it possible to increase food production but pollutes rivers and oceans.
Freshwater use
⚠️ Increasing-risk zone
Human pressures (intensive agriculture, climate change, deforestation) strongly disrupt the fresh water cycle.
And actually, how does it work?

1. Link the different issues !
Our cards make learning about environmental interactions both easy and captivating. Thanks to our facilitator and your discussions, you will be able to unravel the complex links between causes and consequences of the degradation of Planetary Boundaries.
In which risk-zone climate change is located ?
Can you identify 2 of the causes of climate change ?
Voici 6 frontières planétaires, lesquelles sont menacées par l'agriculture ?
2. Adopt a global vision of ecology !
By connecting the different cards, participants are encouraged to create their own fresco.
Faced with the complexity of planetary boundaries, our approach inspired by the Climate Fresk offers a simplified, fun and in-depth understanding of ecological issues.
Planetary
boundaries
3. Make your creation your own !
Each participant is encouraged to decorate the fresco, giving free rein to their creativity, but also to express their feelings and emotions. Learning is not just mental ! Being in contact with one's sensitivity and everything that emerges allows for better integration of the experience.
Let your imagination run free !
Customize your fresco, decorate the cards that moves you, those that scare you and together choose a title.
Once the fresco is completed, participants are encouraged to express feelings raised by the ecological crisis.
Emotion is also a catalyst for change !
In the final part, each team comments on its fresco, its key messages then the facilitator gives an oral restitution of the fresco created.
